設立背景
紐伯瑞兒童文學獎（Newbery Medal），又稱紐伯瑞獎。1713年，紐伯瑞出生在英國農家。他是自學成才的兒童文學作家和出版家。1744年他編寫並出版了世界上第一本專門的、價格低廉的兒童書——《美麗小書》；他開辦了世界上第一家專門的兒童讀物印刷廠、世界上第一家專門的兒童書店，從此他不斷改進，印刷發行了許多精美的兒童圖書，深受兒童喜歡，由於他打破當時保守的風氣，崇尚的“快樂至上”的兒童教育觀念，開闢英美兒童文學之路，所以後人稱紐伯瑞為——兒童文學之父，紐伯瑞的貢獻對於兒童文學，可以說是個重要的里程碑。
為了表彰和紀念紐伯瑞在艱苦卓絕中對歐美兒童文學的開創之功，1922年，由美國圖書館學會（American Library Association - ALA）的分支機構—— 美國圖書館兒童服務學會(Association for Library Service to Children - ALSC)創設了紐伯瑞兒童文學獎（The Newbery Medal for Best Children's Book）。
獎項設定
這個獎每年頒發一次，專門獎勵上一年度出版的英語兒童文學優秀作品。每年頒發金獎（Newbery Medal Award）一部、銀獎（Newbery Honor Books）一部或數部。首屆金獎由房龍的《人類的故事》獲得。這一獎項設立以來，獲獎作品的規模和水準，已是舉世公認的事實。
