童金南，男，1962年5月生，博士、教授、博士生導師。國家傑出青年基金獲得者。

1978年9月-1982年7月，原武漢地質學院地層古生物學專業本科學習，獲學士學位。
1982年9月-1985年7月，中國地質大學（武漢）古生物學和地層學專業研究生學習，獲碩士學位。
1985年7月至今，中國地質大學（武漢）任教（1996年12月在原地質礦產部破格晉升為教授，1999年12月評為博士生導師）。
1994年10月-12月，1997年11月-1998年1月，1998年11月-1999年2月分別在美國Smithsonian研究所、澳大利亞Deakin大學和美國Arizona大學進行科學訪問和合作研究。
現任國際地層委員會三疊系分會選舉委員、國際地質對比規劃IGCP-467項co-leader、中國古生物學會常務理事、中國古生物學會教育與普及委員會副主任兼秘書長、全國地層委員會三疊系專業組和定量地層專業組委員。
長期致力於二疊系―三疊系界線地質學和三疊紀地層學和古生物學方面的研究工作，主攻二疊系―三疊系界線和下三疊統印度階―奧倫尼克階界線層型（“金釘子”）及古生代末大滅絕後三疊紀初的生態系復甦。已發表科研論文80餘篇，15篇論文被SCI收錄，出版專著和主編文集7部，在國外出版專著2部。獲國家自然科學二等獎1項、湖北省自然科學一等獎2項、國土資源部科技一等獎1項。
