本書在回顧學術界隱喻研究的基礎上，以當代認知語言學和功能語言學為理論框架，從社會文化這一新穎的角度考察科學語篇的隱喻性質。為了論證科學語篇的隱喻性質，本書首先討論科學和詩學及修辭之間的關係。研究的核心問題是科學語篇中辭彙隱喻和語法隱喻的表現形式、功能、特徵以及兩類隱喻的互補性。從中可以看出隱喻之所以在貌似客觀的科學語篇中隨處可見，是因為隱喻在科學探索和科學思想傳播過程中都發揮了不可或缺的作用。該研究為審視科學本質和解讀科學語篇提供了新的思路。
