序言

20世紀中葉以來,關於神經系統的研究從以往生物與心理學研究的邊緣地位躍升,成為神經科學這一交叉學科。這一新學科將生物化學、細胞生物學、解剖學、生理學、心理學、神經病學、精神病學等具有不同背景的科學家與臨床醫生們聯繫起來,研究令人激動的腦的秘密。他們專注於探索神經元的功能機制。澄清行為與認知的神經基礎,了解神經系統疾病。1969年神經科學學會的創建大大促進了該學科的發展,如今該學會已經擁有近37000名會員。第一個針對神經科學的學術培訓項目建立於醫學院(1965年加州大學聖迭戈分校建立神經科學系,1966年哈佛大學建立神經生物學系)。第一個本科生培訓項目於1972年建立於.Amherst學院和Oberlin學院,後者培養了諾貝爾獎獲得者RogeiSperry和三位神經科學會會長。時至今日,全世界已經有超過300個神經科學系或相應的培養項目。
