《實用英語系列教程》是一套高起點英語學習教程，包括《當代高級英語閱讀》、《當代高級英語寫作》、《當代高級英漢互譯》三個分冊，對象為各類非英語專業研究生、英語專業高年級學生，以及具有相當基礎的英語自學者。
本冊為《當代高級英語閱讀》，著重培養學生閱讀難度高、內容新的英語文章的能力。與同類教材相比，它有如下特徵： （1） 編寫理念先進。以當代閱讀的認知理論為指導，突出題材的實用性和時效性，注重內容的廣度和深度，練習形式多樣，將客觀信息的記憶和主觀思考能力的發揮相結合。（2） 內容新，範圍廣。書中課文大多選自近五年來的英美國家的出版物，內容涵蓋了語言、文化、科技、經濟、教育、文藝等十多個學科。（3） 語言地道、規範。文章作者均為美、英著名專家、學者。
本冊編寫具體分工如下。朱巧蓮： 第3、6、10、11、12單元；姚喜明： 第1、17、18、20單元；馬莉： 第5、7、13單元；王紅： 第4、14單元；馮江鴻： 第15、16單元；楊兆明： 第2、9單元；馮國平： 第8、19單元。全書編寫體例由王紅、姚喜明負責確定，最後由姚喜明負責統稿。
