“現代語言學理論綜述”是國內高校語言學與套用語言學方向碩士研究生開設的必修課之一，其對研究生專業學習和發展的重要性自不待言。儘管國內已出版過一些可作為該課程教材使用的語言學理論著作，但這些著作在編寫時都沒有充分考慮到不同院校之間在研究生培養目標、授課學時與方式、研究生入學水平等方面的差異，在理論問題探討的廣度和深度上存在著一些與高校實際教學需求不相符的情況。鑒於此，我們主要根據理工科院校多年來的實際教學狀況和需要，編寫了這本現代語言學理論著作。
《現代語言學理論綜述》按理論流派分為四大部分——結構學派、功能學派、生成學派和認知學派。第1部分包括第1和第二章，分別論述了歐洲和美國的結構主義語言學理論；第二部分包括第三和第四章，依次介紹了布拉格學派和倫敦學派的功能語言學理論；第三部分以第五章一章全面系統地論述了被稱為“語言學革命”的喬姆斯基轉換生成語法理論；第四部分論及的是20世紀80年代以來剛剛興起的認知語言學理論，該理論構成了當今語言學界的熱點分支學科，所以該部分用了五章的篇幅分別探討了認知語言學中的一些熱點問題，如概念隱喻和概念轉喻、意象圖式和多義性、範疇化和理想化認知模型、象似性、概念合成理論等。
《現代語言學理論綜述》的特點是緊貼研究生專業發展需要和理工科院校英語語言學碩士研究生培養目標要求，在選題上不求面面俱到，而是有取有舍，對選用的理論根據學生實際專業水平儘量做到論述系統全面，追本溯源，用學術性的語言呈現理論全貌。
