80年代末，在倫敦和紐約街頭牆壁上最顯眼的塗鴉就是“克萊普頓（Clapton）”了。這首《淚灑天堂》是克萊普頓用他已經被悲痛碾得粉碎的心為紀念他的兒子所作。
在一次演出歸來的途中，年輕的布魯斯吉他大師Stevie Ray Vaughan和Clapton的演出夥伴Colin Smythe 和Nigel Browne 在直升機事故中喪生，克萊普頓坐在後面的飛機上親眼目睹了這一慘痛的場面。他們都是克萊普頓最親近的朋友。雪上加霜的是，幾個月後，他的幼子Conor從曼哈頓53層樓的視窗意外墜下身亡。他不是英國吉他搖滾巨星、6項格萊美獲獎歌手，他只是一位平凡的父親，一個因為失去孩子而頻頻苛責自己的可憐父親。從這首寫給死去兒子的歌中，我們可以略微體會到42歲才喜得貴子的他失去兒子的悲痛心情。真正的大喜或大悲之後反而是平靜，沒有傷過的人永遠不會懂……他說不會再演奏這首歌曲了，因為他已經從失去兒子的陰霾中走了出來，沒有足夠的感情去演奏它。
