學習法律，離不開了解法律文化。唯有把現行法律放在文化背景中加以考察，才能更深刻地認識法律，更合理地運用法律。法律文化既包括精神層面的東西，即法律意識——人們對法律普遍所持有的觀念和態度，包括“法律心理、法律思想學說”等內容，也包括物質層面的東西，即法律制度，包括“法律規範（如法典、規章）、法律設施（如立法、司法機構）”等。法律意識是法律文化的深層結構，法律制度是法律文化的表層結構。我們了解法律文化不能僅停留在表層結構，還必須深入挖掘其深層結構，了解法律現象背後的法律心理和法律思想學說，而且從歷時的角度來考察它們是如何支配著法律向前發展的。本書就是循著法律意識—法律歷史演進—法律制度這個線索來安排章節內容的，既介紹自然法思想等觀念性的東西，也梳理法律制度從古希臘、羅馬時代到近現代的歷史發展，還介紹當今世界上主要國家的法律制度。本書每章由Introduction,Texts,Snapshot in Chinese三部分組成。其中，Introduction引入本章主題，介紹背景信息，啟發讀者思考；Texts由2-6篇選文構成，選文中注出生詞含義，涉及較為重要的文化負載詞時，則以腳註進行解釋；每篇選文之後安排Snapshotin Chinese，用編譯的方式為選文提供譯文。 本書既可為中國的法律學習者和研究者較為全面地介紹法律文化知識，也可以為法律英語學習者提供原汁原味的法律英語文章，幫助他們積累法律英語辭彙，提升法律英語閱讀能力。
