生平
十一歲就做樂曲在皇家教堂演出，十四歲擔任管理及修理皇家樂器之職，因而得到許多音樂的知識與修養，並為皇家樂隊做了多首進行曲也是詹姆士二世御前大鍵琴師。二十歲繼承老師的職務擔任西敏寺大教堂管風琴師，同時推出很多作品，對於戲劇和教堂音樂多所貢獻。直到1695逝世，享年36歲。死後葬於西敏寺他生前所彈奏的管風琴底下。
普塞爾有生之年一直被民眾所欣賞與愛戴，可是死後他的名聲和音樂每況愈下。英國的愛樂者開始偏好德國人的作品，卻忽略了自己的作曲家。十九世紀時，有些普塞爾的作品被印製出版，但多半是經過了修改，他大膽的合聲和不同凡響的旋律都被修改過，很多合唱曲甚至被重新配置和聲，更糟糕的是有許多被演奏的作品是他最差的創作，於是被誤解為一個沉悶無趣的作曲家。
1876年普塞爾協會(Purcell Soceity)終於開始有計畫的將他的作品以原譜出版。普塞爾全集的最後一部，第32部，在1962年出版，也因此他的 歌曲和室內樂才開始逐漸地在被人演唱、演奏甚至於灌錄成唱片。
