在英語教學中，我們一直強調聽、說、讀、寫四種能力並重。根據我國的國情，我們認為閱讀能力是英語水平的主要標誌。在學習英語過程中，要提高閱讀能力應該注重三種閱讀方法：精讀、泛讀和快速閱讀。本套教材就是要幫助高職高專等大學基礎階段的學生強化英語快速閱讀的能力。 在母語環境中，我們進行閱讀出於多種原因，其中興趣是很重要的一個原因。然而，在以學習為目的的外語閱讀中，閱讀往往是一種能力的培養。我國的英語學習者在閱讀中，比較偏重於辭彙和語法，久而久之會養成逐詞逐句地死摳詞義和句子結構的壞習慣。有些學生簡直是在破譯“密電碼”，結果對閱讀的興趣蕩然無存。因此，我們以為，學生在閱讀過程中應該注重閱讀內容，並且養成快速閱讀的能力。根據語言學家和外語教學者的研究，在保證理解閱讀材料70%，的情況下，閱讀速度越快越好。為此，我們編寫了本套教材，旨在幫助英語學習者強化閱讀興趣，提高閱讀速度和能力。
