個人履歷
1947年加入法國國籍，就讀於巴黎政治學院，1952年在哈佛獲得政治學碩士學位，後取得博士學位。1968年，霍夫曼在哈佛大學創建了Harvard University Center for European Studies 並任主任。霍夫曼的學術生涯主要在美國展開，從1956年起在哈佛任教至今（除1966-1967年在史丹福大學任教），現任哈佛大學西歐研究中心主任，同時兼任美國對外關係委員會委員、美國政治科學學會理事、美國藝術科學學院院士。
斯坦利·霍夫曼曾是美國現實主義代表人物沃爾弗斯和法國現實主義大師阿隆的學生，他對阿隆的理論特別推崇，受其很大影響。
