《女子監獄》是根據 Piper Kerman的回憶錄《Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison》改編而成，描述了主人公Piper（Taylor Schilling）在大學裡結識了一名女毒販Alex Vause（Laura Prepon），在交往過程中，主人公Piper曾幫女毒販運黑錢過關。10年後，女主角結識了男人Larry Bloom，並與之相愛。誰知噩耗傳來，警方逮捕女毒販Alex Vause，Piper遭到牽連，因10年前運黑錢事件被判入獄服刑15個月。Piper的社會經驗很少，面對糟糕的新環境有些不知所措。在聯邦女子監獄內，她將第一次領略什麼是「監獄文化」——這裡有敵意，有包容，有眼淚，有歡笑，也有愛。她雖然得到了一群性格坦率的女囚犯的認可，但她的牢獄生活絕不會一帆風順。據稱該劇和《單身毒媽》（Weeds）是同類劇集，都屬於「涉毒黑色喜劇」。第66屆艾美獎中該劇拿到了艾美獎12項提名。
2016年該劇獲得美國演員工會獎喜劇類最佳群戲獎。
