根據澳洲著名作家彼得·凱瑞的同名獲獎小說改編，故事發生在19世紀中葉的英格蘭，奧斯卡與露辛達是對可愛的賭徒，奧斯卡是一名虔誠的牧師，露辛達則是富有的女繼承人，在自英國開往悉尼的輪船上，兩人因賭而結緣。奧斯卡有一個瘋狂的構想，他計畫建造一座玻璃教堂並將之運送到偏遠的山區，兩人因此而定下賭注，按照預想，無論輸贏他們都將贏得彼此的愛情，然而殘酷的命運卻和他們開了個巨大的玩笑……

故事借Oscar的曾孫之口娓娓道來：19世紀，青年Oscar Hopkins在傳統的教士家庭長大，在牛津接受教育並改信英國國教。懷著一顆天使般的心，他現在正前往到澳洲內陸傳教；Lucinda從小在農場長大，繼承遺產後現在經營玻璃工廠，從倫敦採購完原材料返回澳洲，是內心燃燒著熾熱的欲望的女性解放主義者。兩人在船上相遇，並且發現對方和自己一樣，都是狂熱的賭徒，這使他們的關係更親近了。Lucinda和Oscar打賭，如果後者能建造一座玻璃教堂並順利將其運往內陸山區，他就能贏得Lucinda的全部遺產。但兩個人都沒想到，這個打賭改變了兩人的一生……
