本書是為高等學校土木工程專業學生學習專業英語所編寫的教材。編者認為開設“土木工程專業英語”的目的是應充分培養學生學習專業英語的興趣，調動學生學習專業英語的積極性和主動性，自覺自愿地閱讀英語專業文獻，從而提升以英語為工具與國際同行交流專業知識的能力。因此，本書收集的資料在注重知識結構完整性的同時，通過引入大量的插圖以及對世界土木工程界名人、有特色的工程結構以及若干重大結構失效原因的介紹，增加本書的生動性和趣味性。
