《印中搜聞》是新教傳教士在馬六甲創辦的最早的外文期刊，側重對印度和中國傳教情況的報導，介紹了中國的佛、道和一些民間信仰。由於清政府實行閉關政策，中西交往阻斷。在這種情況下，以英文出版的《印中搜聞》上刊載的有關中國方方面面的報導，便成為西方人了解中國現貌的主要資料來源。《印中搜聞》創辦不久，便在歐美學術界和漢學界產生了很大影響，至今仍得到當今漢學家的很高評價，成為最有價值的傳教會歷史記載之一。
