中國和西方國家有著不同的文明和不同的制度。改革開放以來，中國逐步建立起一套符合國情的政治、經濟和社會制度，並取得有目共睹的成就。但是同時，面對不同的制度文明，中國始終懷著開放、謙虛和包容的心態。 正是基於這種大背景之下，本項目以“制度文明對話”為主題，邀請美國康奈爾大學教授卡贊斯坦、倫敦政治經濟學院研究員馬丁.雅克、日內瓦外交與國際關係學院教授張維為、香港中文大學教授王紹光、台灣大學教授朱雲漢等中外思想精英20餘人，共議人類社會發展中所遇到的普遍性、深層次制度問題，並且在深入研究討論中國制度文明特點及未來發展方向的基礎上，總結了中國特色社會主義制度在經濟、政治建設和黨的建設等領域的作用，對中國今後制度建設應把握的原則及重點提出了意見和建議，形成了對中國制度建設具有參考借鑑意義的研究成果。
