本書以圖的代數表示為起點，著重於多面形、 曲面、嵌入和地圖等對象, 用一個統一的理論框架，揭示在更具普遍性的組合乃至代數構形中, 可通過局部對稱性反映全局性質. 特別是通過多項式型的不變數刻畫這些構形在不同拓撲、組合和代數變換下的分類.
同時, 也提供這些分類在算法上的實現和複雜性分析. 雖然本書中的結論多以作者的前期工作為基礎發展得到, 但仍有一定數量的新結果. 例如, 關於圖在給定虧格曲面上可嵌入性的識別, 沿四個不同理論思路的判準就是新近得到的. 在虧格為零的特殊情形下,從它們中的一個可一舉導出Euler、Whitney、MacLane和Lefschetz在圖的平面性方面沿不同理論路線的結果. 本書可供純粹數學、套用數學、系統科學以及計算機科學等方面的大學生及相關教師使用，還可供相關專業研究生和數學研究人員閱讀.
