中央黨史和文獻研究院是黨的歷史和理論研究專門機構，是黨中央直屬事業單位，為正部級。2018年3月21日，中共中央印發的《深化黨和國家機構改革方案》指出：黨史和文獻工作是黨的事業的重要組成部分，在黨和國家工作大局中具有不可替代的重要地位和作用。為加強黨的歷史和理論研究，統籌黨史研究、文獻編輯和著作編譯資源力量，構建黨的理論研究綜合體系，促進黨的理論研究和黨的實踐相結合，打造黨的歷史和理論研究高端平台，將中央黨史研究室、中央文獻研究室和中央編譯局職責整合，組建中央黨史和文獻研究院，對外保留中央編譯局牌子。
