該教材為重慶市“'中國文化走出去'實驗班教學改革探索”高等教育教學改革研究重大項目和四川外國語大學“三特”項目“中國文化走出去”實驗班，以及“三特”教材資助項目的建設成果之一。教材用於《中國文學導論及經典文本選讀》該專業核心課程，主要內容包括中國思想史的介紹、中國思想經典文本中英文對照選本、中外學者對中國思想文化英文評述選篇和思考題。這樣的內容設計，是為了滿足實驗班本科階段培養具有紮實的中英文語言文化基礎、具備深入進行跨文化研究與運用潛質的高素質專業人才的培養目標，從目前來說很難在國內外找到符合這一課程設計的教材。目前國內外常見的中國文化英文讀本教材都適用於用英文介紹中國文化的概況、文學、哲學、物質文化等方面的知識，以介紹性為主、以點帶面，基本不涉及對經典文本本身的閱讀和討論。教材自《中國文化導論及經典文本導讀》2013年進行課程的全面改版以來就開始進行籌劃，筆者從選篇、譯本篩選、教材體例設計等方面逐步進行，前後進行了多次修改和重新布局，語言的勘誤、梳理、潤色、調整也仍在持續進行之中。通過與課程的配合，筆者也發現教材之中存在的各種問題。例如，原稿的注釋採用章節附注的形式，學生查閱不太方便，於是在教材的第五稿中筆者改用了“邊注”的形式。此外，筆者經過近幾年的教學逐步了解到中國英語專業本科生的中英文知識背景情況，對選篇和簡介之中可能出現的知識盲點進行註解。整本教材都力圖做到知識性、覆蓋面、實用性、啟發性等各個方面的結合，以“適用”和“好用”為基本原則，選擇*為經典的思想文化文本英譯，並提供中文原文對照；同時兼顧拓展性，培養“實驗班”精英教育目標之具備思辨、分析、比較能力的高素質人才。本教材初稿於2015年基本成型，幾經修改目前仍在大規模地試用之中，並與我們的線上開放課程相配合。隨著該課程2017年9月在重慶市線上課程平台的上線，教材使用的規模會擴大。
