內容簡介

本書共收輯文章80篇，按主題劃分成10個單元，每個單元又含若干篇章，長短不等。如科技之頁，介紹的是科技信息；又如環境，則重點放在人類生存環境及常識等方面。所收文章均有關科技，學生生活和學習兩大內容，並非面面俱到的百科全書，因為我們的主要讀者是全國高中學生。

就難度而言，這80篇文章大抵分三個層次：最淺的是Level 1,其次為Level 2 ，最難的是Level 3。這個難度是以高中學生的水平來衡量的，衡量的依據是生詞量、句子結構的複雜程度。標名L3的文章，春難相當於近年來高考閱讀理解項目中的D篇，有的還略為難一些。

這些文章大部分只注生詞，不加注釋，用意是讓讀者自己利用工具書，通讀後即能讀書攻。讀者須留心的是，一篇難度為L3的文章，只通讀一二遍是難以讀懂的，要細細咀嚼才行。讀者還應注意，完成文章後所附的五道題目，還不能說完成了閱讀。

Environment 1.Protection of Environment The closing decades(幾十年）of the twentieth century have seen a growing awareness of the need to protect the environment. An increasing number of people are concerned that the rapid growth in human numbers and the environmental impact of human activity will damage the quality of the environment in which they live, affect their own health and leave a legacy(遺產）of environmental destruction for future generations. A measure of this growing concern is the large number of environmental groups that have been formed to address（致力於）a wide range of environmental issues(重大問題）.Some groups, such as Greenpeace and the World Wide Funds For Nature（全球的）issues. Other groups, such as the Australian Conservation Foundation, the Wilderness Society and the National Trust, operate within a country but still tend to be concerned with the broader issues. Smaller, community-based groups, also come out from time to time but are usually concerned with specific local issues. Environmental groups seed to achieve their aims by encouraging awareness of particular environmental issues, by seeking to influence decision-makers, and by engaging in direct action. Forms of direct that embarrass(使尷尬）polluters, and consumer boycotts（貿易抵制）.
