The world has seen dramatic changes since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Population growth, the scarcity of resources and the development of new technologies are among the most pressing challenges our planet has been facing. In the past 20 years, the international community has made a lot of positive progress in advancing sustainable development, for example, actively promoting the implementation of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (1992), Agenda 21 and World Summit on Sustainable Development Implementation Plan and so on. Developing countries have made great efforts too in this regard, in particular in poverty alleviation and the achievement of the MDGs. Over 100 countries have developed strategies for sustainable development, with the active engagement of governments of at all levels, businesses, civil society and the general public. The concept of sustainable development has been deeply rooted among the people.
