《世界文學名著英文版:白鯨》以第一人稱敘述：伊什梅爾受僱於“裴郭德號”出海獵鯨，老船長亞哈是個狡猾老練的水手，計畫向一隻前次航行中毀了他一條腿的白鯨莫比·迪克復仇。大副斯達巴克試圖說服亞哈放棄復仇的計畫，但瘋狂的老人反而脅迫他遵從命令。在尋找莫比·迪克的過程中，他們捕到了一些鯨魚。後來，他們發現了白鯨莫比·迪克，亞哈在與之交戰三晝夜後，用魚叉刺中白鯨。白鯨被激怒了，將船撞沉，船上只有伊什梅爾逃生，亞哈被標槍繩套住了脖子而喪生，其他的成員全部遇難。這部小說具有史詩般的規模和沉鬱瑰奇的文筆，通篇充滿象徵。有的人認為追殺是一種報復的象徵，報復行動的結局往往是同歸於盡；而另一種理解則認為亞哈的追殺是一種追求，這種追求是人類的兩大追求之一，即原始的滿足本能欲望（情慾、暴力等等）的追求。

赫爾曼·梅爾維爾（1819—1891），是美國小說家、詩人，享有海洋文學家的稱譽。梅爾維爾的祖先是蘇格蘭的一個名門望族，在他的祖父那一輩來到美國，並且參加了獨立戰爭，在社會上有一定的影響。他出生於紐約，少年時代，父親破產，家道衰落。他12歲喪父，15歲時輟學，走向社會獨自謀生；他先後做過銀行職員、農場工人、鄉村教師，飽受生活的艱辛和風險。1839年，梅爾維爾開始航海生活，他到一艘往返於美國紐約和英國利物浦之間的輪船上當服務員。1841年，他開始在捕鯨船上做水手，在隨後的三年間到過世界上的很多地方，大大開闊了眼界。他曾流落到塔希提島和馬克薩斯島上，在有食人風氣的土著部落中生活過，他還和捕鯨船上的其他夥伴一起，同專制行為作鬥爭，並曾因暴動等原因被監禁。後來，他在“美國號”軍艦上服役，一直到1844年在波士頓上岸，才結束了航海生活。梅爾維爾退伍回到紐約開始創作生活，最初的長篇小說《泰比》、《奧穆》、《馬爾迪》、《雷德本》、《白外套》都是描寫海洋生活的。1851年梅爾維爾的代表作《白鯨》出版，但這部傑出的作品在當時卻沒有得到重視。他的小說作品還有《皮埃爾》（1852）、《伊斯雷爾·波特》（1855）、《騙子的化裝表演》（1857）；短篇小說和散文有《代筆者巴特貝》（1853）、《迷惘的島嶼》（1854）、《班尼托·西蘭諾》（1855）等，後來集成《廣場故事》於1856年出版。他去世前所寫的長篇小說《畢利·伯德》（1924）在他死後30多年才出版。梅爾維爾晚年轉向寫詩，1866年自費印行第一部詩集《戰事集》，1876年自費出版以宗教為題材的18000行長詩《克拉瑞爾》，1888年和1891年自費出版詩集《約韓·瑪爾和其他水手》和詩集《梯摩里昂》，各印25冊。
