Whenin1978GovernorJamesThompsonaskedmetoorganizeanagriculturaltrademis-siontoChina,Hanpavedthewaywithasuccess-fulagenda.
ShortlybeforeHan'sdepartureasdeputychief,Ihostedafun-filledluncheonforhimintheU.SCapitolbuilding.Itwasarollickingsuccess.Inhiswork,HanalwayspresentedthepositionoftheChinesegovernmentinthebestlightpossibleandsomeoftheassignmentswerenoteasy.
Ineveryapproach,hewaspositive,vigorous,smiling,courteous,anddeferential.
HanXukeptfriendshiptiesstrongeveninadversity.Itmatterednotwhethereitherofuswasinofficeorout.Yearafteryear,hekeptinvitingtheFindleystodinnersandreceptionswhilehewasinWashingtonandonhisreturntoChina,tobehisguestsforaholidaythere.ForHanXu,friendshipwasforever.
