Shu Tapestry, or Tapestry from Sichuan, refers to the silk-made jacquard brocade produced in Sichuan. It’s usually made of dyed silk threads and finely decorated with geometric patterns.

Shu Tapestry is one of the four famous brocades of China with the Yun Tapestry in Nanjing, Song Tapestry in Suzhou and Zhuang Tapestry in Guangxi. In 2006, Shu Tapestry Weaving Technique was enlisted into the first group of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Origin Introduction

Being the home to Shu Tapestry, Chengdu has once been established as the “Jinguan City” in BC 316, when the brocade industry was already quite developed. Meanwhile, Shu Tapestry has enjoyed a constant development over the past two thousand years.

Pattern style

The pattern of Shu Tapestry has undergone the development of more than two thousand years, with distinct time features in different historical periods. However, an eternal characteristic of Shu Tapestry’s pattern is its use of animals, plants, and natural sceneries etc.

Weaving Technique

Shu Tapestry utilizes the mulberrysilk as the warp and weft, and changes the structure and form of mulberrysilks througha series of procedures, resulting in exquisiteand colorfulbrocade, which is known as the traditional weavingtechniqueof Shu Tapestry.

Challenges Faced

The greatest challenge faced by Shu Tapestry is the impact from digital tapestry, which is synthesized and printed through the computer. Comparatively, the handmade Shu Tapestry has higher cost and price than digital tapestry.
