創作背景
2009年，JAY-Z創立了音樂經紀公司Roc Nation，《Run This Town》則講述了Roc Nation誕生時JAY-Z的心裡想法。一次在夏威夷，蕾哈娜與No I.D.的團隊一同錄製了一批歌曲。之後她將一首錄製好的歌曲進行了剪輯成了一份小樣。JAY-Z聽到該小樣後，決定要參與該曲錄製。坎耶·維斯特知道後，阻止了JAY-Z，讓他把錄歌的機會給自己。經過商量後，JAY-Z擔任主導歌手，坎耶·維斯特貢獻一段主歌部分的說唱。《Run This Town》採樣自希臘樂隊The 4 Levels of Existence的歌曲《Someday in Athens》。

《Run This Town》是JAY-Z一次氣勢澎湃的回歸。段落開始時，金屬棒敲擊聲、呼喊聲配以蕾哈娜極具穿透力的嗓音，引出JAY-Z的說唱。但該曲也證明JAY-Z開始老了，坎耶·維斯特的表現明顯比JAY-Z更有“活力”一些。
歌曲爭議
2013年11月，TufAmerica唱片公司聲稱，JAY-Z未經允許，私自盜用了其旗下藝人Eddie Bo於1969年發行的單曲《Hook & Sling Part 1》的部分樣本，用在《Run ThisTown》之中。該公司以以涉嫌剽竊旗下藝人單曲為由向JAY-Z提出控訴。2014年12月，TufAmerica唱片公司敗訴。
