Unit2:writing6

In paragraph 7, it has two phases(改為phrases)which I have never seen. They are ‘toot one’s own horn’ and ‘strut one’s stuff’. I look them up in dictionary, ‘toot one’s own horn’ means ‘praise oneself, call attention to one’s own skill, intelligence, or success, boast’, ‘strut one’s stuff’ means ‘show off one’s talents or skills’, I feel they have a common meaning which is ‘boast’ or ‘show off’.
In paragraph 8, there are many new words, such as offensive and narcissistic. ‘Offensive’ is noun or an adjective, when it is a noun, it means ‘a planned military attack’; when it is an adjective, it means ‘used for attacking’. In the sentence, it is an adjective, but I feel the meaning of the word in the sentence is ‘highly irritating or annoying, unpleasant or disagreeable to the sense, disgusting’. The author in order to say some showoffs are not acceptable, which will make people felt unpleasant or disgusting. ‘Narcissist’ is anoun, which means ‘someone who has too much admiration for themselves, and ‘narcissistic’ is an adjective, which means ‘a narcissistic personality ’, the author set an example---a narcissistic showoffs(感覺加a 不恰當,應該去了) who are willing to do anything to be and to stay the center of attention. In my opinion, they want to show their best part and confidence. They feel that they can outshine all others.
In these two paragraphs, the author wanted to say everyone has some sort of need to show off, no one’s completely immune. Showoffs have two forms, one is forgivable or acceptable, and the other is offensive or not acceptable. I agree with it. I think showoffs are right in an appropriate occasion. For example, a mother is showing off that her child is beautiful, it is acceptable. Then, another says her child not only beautiful but also smart. I think it is not acceptable, because she wants to say her child is better, it will make the first mother unhappy.
