He's intelligent, scored in the 99th percentile in high school and developed an excellent taste for art. It's not that he lacks morals, he wouldn't hurt anyone. He feels his victims are insured, so no harm. His life is guided by his own abilities rather than by any god. His attitude changes when when he meets a young Christian nurse and it's love at first sight. He makes a lot of money but this time he makes the mistake of stealing valuable paintings from a wealthy lawyer, not knowing that the paintings actually belong to a criminal syndicate. His mistake is allegorically equivalent to whacking a hornet's nest, but the mob is worse than hornets. Then, because of the notoriety, it is impossible to sell the paintings. Grant concocts the only remaining profitable remedy: to ransom the paintings back to the owners. He would make contact with the lawyer, trade the paintings for cash, and disappear, believing he wouldn't be found. This plan sets in motion a cat and mouse game between Grant, a clever police detective and the mob, the stakes being Grant's own life and the life of others.
