The finite element method of lines(FEMOL)is a newly developed semidiscrete method for analysis of engineering problems.This monograph attempts to give a state-of-the-art description of the fundamental theory and practical applications of the method and other related methods.

The whole book is arranged in three main parts.

Part Ⅰ describes how the currently-available ordinary differential equation(ODE)software can be used,with the aid of some conversion techniques,to solve most ODE problems in applications,and how this has lead to the ODE-solver-method.

Part Ⅱ shows how the classical finite-difference-based method of lines(MOL)gains a new life by using an ODE solver and can be generalized to solve problems on irregular domains.

Part Ⅲ,the major part of the book,exclusively deals with FEMOL by extended discussion of the fundamental theory,linear applications and nonlinear applications of the method.

The book suits a wide range of readers such as scientinc researchers,engineers,university lectures and postgraduate students.
