《TCP/IP詳解,卷1:協定》是一本完整而詳細的TCP/IP協定指南。作者用Lawrence Berkeley實驗室的tcpdump程式來捕獲不同作業系統和TCP/IP實現之間傳輸的不同分組。對tcpdump輸出的研究可以幫助理解不同協定如何工作,主要講述TCP/IP協定方面的內容。與其他的TCP/IP書藉的最大不同在於,本書不僅僅講述了RFCS的標準協定,而且結合大量實例講述了TCP/IP協定包的定義原因及在各種不同的作業系統中(如Sunos4.1.3、Soloris2.2、AIX3.2.2)的套用與工作方式,這樣可以以動態方式講述TCP/IP的知識,使讀者可以輕鬆掌握TCP/IP的知識:路由協定、定址協定、組控制協定、簡單郵件傳輸協定等。全書內容實用性強,是在校生學習TCP/IP知識的良師益友。本書適合作為計算機專業學生學習網路的教材和教師參考書。也適用於研究網路的技術人員。

第一章概述介紹了基礎和背景知識,但也提出了許多重要特性如:分層;TCP,UDP的根本區別;End to End與Hop by Hop;IP位址的分類和點分十進制表示法;數據封裝過程;連線埠號...這些術語在後面的章節會有詳細的解釋.
第二章介紹了TCP/IP的鏈路層協定.乙太網與IEEE802數據封裝的比較;SLIP和PPP.文中作者提到"現在SLIP用戶仍然比PPP用戶多",是由於本書的寫作時間比較早.另外本章還詳細介紹了LOOPBACK,MTU等概念.
第三至十章詳細介紹了IP.IP包結構;IP路由選擇;子網及其掩碼;ARP,RARP協定;ICMP,特別是時間戳和連線埠不可到達;詳細討論了PING,TRACEROUTE這兩個常用的測試用程式;IP路由和動態選路(路由)協定,特別詳細介紹了RIP,並簡單介紹了OSPF,BGP.與一般的書不同的是本書沒有提及CISCO的IGRP,EIGRP,畢竟這不是為CISCO認證編寫的。
第十一章介紹UDP,起初覺得奇怪,因為夾在中間而不是和第十七章開始的TCP放在一起.後來才發現,從第十二章的廣播開始UDP已經開始使用.
第十二,十三章對廣播,多播(也稱組播)和IGMP協定進行討論.對各種廣播形式進行描述,對組播及其IGMP協定論述相當詳細,組播套用越來越多,大家可以好好學習一下。
第十四,十五,十六章分別介紹DNS,TFTP,BOOTP這些基於UDP的套用.對於大家自認為熟悉的這些套用,只有在讀完之後,你才會說:原來是這么回事!
第十七至二十四章詳細的討論了TCP.TCP封裝結構;TCP連線建立(三次握手)和拆除,其中介紹了很多一般書上沒有出現的內容如半打開和半關閉;TCP數據互動和視窗機制;TCP逾時與重傳(可靠傳輸),並描述了多種實際算法;TCP的各種計時器;TCP的一些修改建議,並提出了T/TCP,詳細的介紹和原始碼在下一卷.
第二十五章介紹SNMP網管協定.詳細討論了MIB和TRAP.做網管的朋友們,這可是福音啊。
其餘的章節用來討論基於TCP的各種套用如遠程登錄的TELNET,RLOGIN,檔案傳輸FTP,電子郵件用的SMTP,基於SUN RPC的NFS,和常用的一些FINGER,WHOIS,X WINDOW等應用程式.作者使用了大量的篇幅對每種套用進行了剖析.
在附錄中,作者提供了書中經常提到的tcpdump,sock程式的相關內容;UNIX常用的配置選項;和大量的免費資源和參考文獻.
本書的翻譯一直遭到許多網友的批評,的確譯文中有些術語的把握有些問題,但是還不會影響到讀者的理解.畢竟本書的寫作和翻譯時間較早.
這是一本百讀不厭的寶書,第一次看時可以是對TCP/IP有一個比較全面的了解過程,以後每次看都會發現還需要可以學到新的並發現可以進一步學習的東西.強烈推薦廣大讀者購買.無論你是初學者還是資深網路人士,只要想要一本TCP/IP的書,本書一定是首選!
可惜的是本書不會再有進一步的修改了,已成絕響。對於新技術如IPV6,就只有靠大家自己努力了。有興趣進行進一步研究的編程人員,請繼續關注卷二和卷三。
