創作背景

《Space Oddity》的創作靈感來自於電影《2001太空漫遊》邀潤。這是一首關於走向死亡的太空人湯姆上校（Major Tom）的歌曲。1969年初，大衛·鮑伊拍攝了一部宣傳片《Love You Till Tuesday》（1984年才發布），來展示他第一張專輯中的歌曲，並為其錄製了一組歌曲。《Space Oddity》的早期版本就出現在這組歌曲中。在這組歌里，其他歌曲都是由Tony Visconti製作的，但他拒絕製作《Space Oddity》，覺得它是一首怪歌。接替Tony Visconti工作的Gus Dudgeon從原聲小樣中發現了全遷槳這首歌的潛力，決定用交響樂配器，讓Paul Buckmaster精心改編，Pentangle樂糠試拔辯隊的鼓手Terry Cox則在它原有的軍樂節奏中加入了一些微妙的爵士節奏。
