SESI公司由Kim Davidson和Greg Hermanovic創建於1987年。Houdini是在Prisms基礎上重新開發而來,可運行於Linux, Windows, Mac OS等作業系統,是完全基於節點模式設計的產物,其結構、操作方式等和其它的三維軟體有很大的差異。Houdini自帶的渲染器是Mantra,基於Reyes渲染架構,因此也能夠快速的渲染運動模糊、景深和置換效果。 Mantra是經過產品驗證的成熟渲染器,可以滿足電影級別的渲染要求。當然,Houdini也有第三方渲染器的接口,比如:RenderMan、Mental ray、Vray和Torque等,可以把場景導出到這些渲染引擎進行渲染。
