1939年生於德州，自小患有小兒麻痹症﹐治病期間常為其他病人演唱。康復後﹐他改到夜總會中獻唱﹐為經理人StanShulman所發掘﹐並於1958年簽約RCA唱片。他的流行曲不多﹐大概最熱門乃是1960年的TellLauraILoveHer﹐得到Billboard單曲流行榜第7位。其後也曾自組Dunes唱片公司﹐比較著名的歌曲有CorinnaCorinna。1963年簽約MGM唱片﹐意圖改為鄉謠路線﹐但不成功﹐很快便消失于樂壇中。Ray Peterson

這是一首相當深情的歌曲，歌中的男主角湯米為了賺得一隻給蘿拉的結婚戒指，參加了危險性極高的非法賽車，結果賠上了自己的性命，臨終前仍不忘說：告訴蘿拉我愛她……。
但是對這首歌推出時的60年代，這種涉及死亡的歌詞，在美國當時保守的社會風氣，卻是相當引人爭議的，雖然歌中提及的死亡是十分含蓄而且微不足道，但在許多衛道人士對剛興起的搖滾樂還視為洪水猛獸的當時，這首語涉死亡的歌曲，簡直是道德的淪喪，對生命的褻瀆。
這首歌除了歌詞聳動，旋律動人也使得它一推出就造成轟動，並很快流傳到英國，但60年代的英國社會比美國還要封閉保守，對於流行音樂採取極為嚴密的監控，凡語涉死亡等反道德的歌曲，尤其是和年輕人有關的，一律被國家廣播電台(即BBC)禁播，因此在宣傳無門的情形下，很多在美國走紅的歌曲，在英國卻沒沒無名。
於是美國的RCA唱片公司決定放棄在英國發行這首歌，但當時的英國EMI唱片公司卻決定放手一搏，另外請來英國當地的歌手Ricky Valance重新翻唱。結果灌錄好以後的新版本，被一家影響力不大的廣播電台看中，不斷的播出這首歌，一傳十、十傳百，這首歌在英國排行榜節節上升，最後在冠軍寶座上坐了三個禮拜才功成身退。
在流行音樂史上，60年代初期一些著名的“死亡搖滾”歌曲，曾經讓很多人深深的感動。
以“Tell Laura I Love Her”、“Teen Angel”和“Dead Man's Curve”等為代表作的“死亡搖滾”，主要都是敘述當時美國的一些青少年愛情故事，由於他們不知道如何正確的解決問題，竟然都在愛情遭遇挫折的時候，以各種不同的方式選擇了死亡來作為結束。
在搖滾樂剛開始誕生與流行的50年代末期和60年代初期，一般青少年的生活與思考模式，跟當今的新生代有著很大的不同，雖然同樣的叛逆，可是卻也同時呈現著一種單純的趣味，不像時下“e時代”年輕人的世界那么複雜，因此曾經在那個年代年輕過的文藝創作者，就經常樂於把創作的背景設定為50年代，描繪當時青少年的愛恨情仇。
提起這一類的作品，曾經刷新百老匯賣座紀錄、並且被改編成電影的【火爆浪子】（Grease!），堪稱經典中的經典，不同的是它並沒有碰觸到“死亡”的話題。
奧斯卡電影《難兄難弟》的插曲，經典的悲劇式搖滾。Ray Peterson的精彩演繹讓人落淚。歌曲旋律非常淒涼，當男人臨死前說：Tell Laura I love her, tell Laura I need her，Tell Laura not to cry，My love for her will never die，這種使人感動得撕心裂肺的愛情，不知道現代社會還會不會發生。
