Damien Rice 來自愛爾蘭，出生於七十年代早期，繪畫與寫歌是他青年時期的興趣，也因此讓他有了組團的念頭，在"O"的專輯內頁有些插畫便是 Damien Rice 自己的作品。在 1997 年他組了一個名為 Juniper 的團，前後發行了三張 EP，"The World Is Dead" 和 "Weathermen" 這兩首單曲也成為電台熱門歌曲，但因為契約問題無法錄製完整的專輯，於是在 99 年 Damien Rice 離開樂團前往 Tuscany，並從此在歐洲流浪了一年，之後又回到了都柏林，想辦法籌錢錄了一張 Demo，寄給了製作人兼電影配樂家的 David Arnold。
