In material released in the United States, the billing for Akemi Kita has been elevated to one of the main stars. She appears only briefly as the photographer's model (in a bikini) in the pre-title sequence.
Tanaka may have been inspired by "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" but the actual story behind "Kaitei Gunkan" dates from the late 1880's when electricity and Jules Verne were both in vogue in Japan. It was a fantasy story called "Denki-Kai" - "The Electric Light Ship."
Media Blasters had originally intended to release the DVD of the film with not only the original Japanese version, but with the American International version, which was dubbed by Titra sound. However, when Toho heard their plans, they refused to give them permission, unless they put their internationally dubbed version on instead. Media Blasters acquiesced and the AIP version still has not had a proper DVD release.
It was reportedly director 'Ishiro Honda' and special effects director 圓谷英二 who decided to give Manda a dragon-like appearance because 1964 would be the year of the dragon.
In preparing his script, screenwriter 關澤新一 used James Churchward's books about the continent of Mu. After this film was given a wide release in the United States by American International under the title "Atragon", Churchward's book were reprinted in a series of paperback editions.
The role of Jinguji was written for 三船敏郎, but his prior commitment to 黑澤明's Akahige (1965) made it impossible for him to participate.
In promotional material issued by American International, Yu Fujiki is credited as playing the "submarine captain." Fujiki played "Yoshito," the photographer's assistant. Jun Tazaki played Captain Jinguji.
This was Toho's big New Year's release for 1964.
In the English dubbed version released by American International, the character name of Jinjugi is retained in the dubbing. In material released by American International, the named has been changed to "Shinguji."
When the main characters first enter the underground lair of Shinguji, proudly displayed on a wall is the battle flag of the Imperial Japanese Navy. This flag was never to be flown again after the Japanese surrender following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Starting at 1:08:01, the international landmarks shown are Tower Bridge in London (UK); L'arc de Triomphe in Paris (France); Red Square in Moscow (Russia); Lower Manhattan in New York City as seen from Brooklyn with the Brooklyn Bridge in the foreground (U.S.A.); Tokyo (Japan).
The scene of Mu's destruction was achieved by filming inside a water tank upside down and then pouring orange dye into the water. During editing, the image was flipped over to make it look right side up, making it look as if the explosions had reached the surface.
Shinguji's submarine flies remarkably well despite having no wings to provide lift.
At 1:26:00 the freezing jet freezes the monster, but not the water around it.
Yet another Toho film in which the enemy/alien spy/infiltrator disguises himself by wearing dark glasses. This is so common that it completely eliminates the surprise when the antagonist is revealed.
