繪畫與寫歌是他青年時期的興趣，也因此讓他有了組團的念頭，在《O》的專輯內頁有些插畫便是Damien Rice自己的作品。在 1997 年他組了一個名為Juniper的團，前後發行了三張 EP，《The World Is Dead》和 《》Weathermen》這兩首單曲也成為電台熱門歌曲，但因為契約問題無法錄製完整的專輯，於是在 1999年Damien Rice離開樂團前往Tuscany，並從此在歐洲流浪了一年，之後又回到了都柏林，想辦法籌錢錄了一張Demo，寄給了製作人兼電影配樂家的David Arnold。
