劇情簡介
Humanity's desperate battle to reclaim the Earth from Godzilla continues. The key to defeating the King of the Monsters may be Mechagodzilla, a robotic weapon thought to have been lost nearly 20,000 years ago.
幕後花絮
This film features Mechagodzilla, Godzilla's mechanical doppelganger that was first introduced in Gojira tai Mekagojira (1974), and made its most recent appearance in Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira: Tôkyô S.O.S. (2003). Mechagodzilla was originally a weapon constructed by alien invaders, but in subsequent films has typically been portrayed as a human-built weapon created to defend the human race from Godzilla and other monsters. The version of Mechagodzilla in this film combines both portrayals, with it being built by the Bilusaludo aliens but with the purpose of defending the Earth from Godzilla.
This is the second entry in a trilogy of anime Godzilla films produced by TOHO Animation and animated by Polygon Pictures, with the first entry, Gojira: Kaijû Wakusei (2017), released theatrically in Japan on November 7, 2017 and worldwide to Netflix exactly two months later. The third entry, Gojira: hoshi wo kû mono (2018), was released to theaters in Japan in November 2018.
This film features Godzilla Earth, the largest incarnation of the character to date, which was previously seen at the end of Gojira: Kaijû Wakusei (2017). Godzilla Earth is 300 meters tall and weighs 100,000 metric tons, with the second-largest version of Godzilla, featured in 新哥斯拉 (2016), standing 118.5 meters tall and weighing 92,000 metric tons.
This is be the first Godzilla film to be a sequel to a prior film in the franchise since Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira: Tôkyô S.O.S. (2003), which was a direct sequel to Gojira X Mekagojira (2002). All films released since then have been set in brand-new continuities and disregard all previous entries in the franchise.
Haruo's English voice actor Chris Niosi reportedly got so upset by the ending that he actually cried while recording his lines.
The twins Miana and Maina had different hair-styles in the concept art, making it easier to tell them apart. In the movie, they look identical except for their expressions, which is even mentioned by the characters.
This film's Japanese theatrical release date, May 18, comes almost exactly 4 years after the original theatrical release date for Godzilla (2014), which was released in the United States and several other countries on May 16, 2014. It will also be released one day after Gojira: Kaijû Wakusei (2017) is released on DVD and Blu-ray in Japan.
Despite towering over Godzilla on the movie poster, Mechagodzilla never appears in the film in his full form, only as a head. The rest of his design was revealed to the audience through the movie's concept art and a special Mechagodzilla toy made by the company Bandai. According to the concept art, he would have had the ability to shape-shift into a multitude of weaponized forms and even split open his head to reveal a blaster.
Writer 虛淵玄 and director 瀨下寬之, both fans of the Godzilla series, toyed with ideas like Mechagodzilla City coming alive at the film's climax, either turning into a monstrous, 1 km tall robot, or transforming its various components into replicas of Mechagodzilla's head and attack Godzilla. Co-director 靜野孔文 rejected such ideas, as he was never a big fan of monster movies, and wanted to avoid silly-looking monster battles, as per the request of Toho Studios. As a result, Mechagodzilla was never revealed in full in the film, only in promotional material.
