1964年， Tracy Chapman 出生於美國俄亥俄州的克利夫蘭的一個工人家庭， 她從小開始學習彈奏吉他，後嘗試創作歌曲。高中畢業後， 特蕾西．查普曼因獲取少數民族學生獎學金得以到大學就讀深造。在大學時， 她主修人類學和非洲人文學。求學期間，她迷戀上了民謠搖滾， 開始在咖啡館裡彈唱自己的作品。她的歌旋律簡單，朗朗上口，歌詞深刻，發人深省。
