《Birthday Cake》原本只是作為專輯的插曲收錄在專輯裡面，只有1分18秒長，但是Rihanna的歌迷通過推特強烈要求製作完整的版本，製作人The-Dream說，他可不想被Rihanna的navy給謀殺，所以最終他們製作了長度為3分39秒的混音版本。

在2012年2月，曾有傳聞Christina Aguilera會是混音版本的合作歌手，傳言的來由是因為Rihanna在推特上發布了一條訊息 "I need somebody #DIRRRTY [sic] on my Birthday #CAKE [sic]"，而Aguilera在2002年就有一首單曲名字就叫《Dirrty》，所以人們把她們聯繫在了一起，後來Rihanna在推特上證實合作歌手不會是女歌手。2012年2月15號，製作人Kosine透露單曲合作歌手會震驚世界，並且完整版本將在2月16號到20號間首次放出。2月16日，有人推測Rihanna的前男友Chris Brown是歌曲的合作者，因為兩人在不同的時間離開同一件錄音室。2012年2月20日，官方正式宣布Chris Brown是該單曲的合作歌手，震驚了歌迷與媒體。
