概述
the beatles在1995年到1997年陸續發行了anthology系列雙專輯，分別為anthology1、anthology2和anthology3，因為是雙專輯，所以共分為六碟。
系列專輯分為三部分，分別對應了早中晚三個時期的披頭士樂隊。
系列1
anthology1發行於1995年11月20日，收錄了披頭士1958年到1964年10月18日為發行的曲目，另外特別收錄了Jhon Lenonn創作的free as a bird作為打榜單曲。

Free As A Bird
free as a bird完全由約翰列儂創作，並在1977年錄製了一個demo。1995年，列儂遺孀小野洋子將這首歌的母帶交給保羅麥卡特尼，麥卡特尼與另外兩位披頭士成員協同製作人Jeff Lynne重新混縮了這首歌曲，並且加上了披頭士其他成員的聲音，使它真正成為了披頭士整體創作的作品。

借著anthology1銷售火熱的東風，anthology2於1996年3月18日在全球發行。和anthology1一樣，anthology2也是一張暢銷的唱片。專輯收錄了1965年2月16日到1968年2月6日披頭士錄製的、未發行的作品，並且重新製作了約翰列儂的real love作為打榜的單曲。
