America and the Law of Nations 1776-1939 is a unique exploration of the ways in which Americans have perceived, applied, advanced, and frustrated international law. It then discusses the intellectual contributions to international law made by leaders in the New Republic -Kent and Wheaton- and the place of international law in the 19th century judgments of Marshall, Story, and Taney. The book goes on to examine the contributions of American utopians -Dodge, Worcester, Ladd, Burritt, and Carnegie- to the establishment of the League of Nations, the World Court, the International Law Association and the American Society of International Law. It finishes with an analysis of the wavering support to international law given by Woodrow Wilson and the emergence of a new American isolationism following the disappointment of World War I. 作者簡介

馬克•威斯頓•賈尼斯（Mark Weston Janis）是美國康乃狄克大學法學院William F. Starr講席教授。 1947年出生於芝加哥，畢業於普林斯頓大學（A.B.1969年），牛津大學（B.A.1972年，期間在皇后學院獲得羅氏獎學金），哈佛大學（J.D.1977年）。他曾在美國海軍服役（1972-75年），在紐約和巴黎的沙利文與克倫威爾律所（Sullivan & Cromwell）從事公司法和金融法律實務（1977 - 1980年）。 1980年起在康乃狄克大學任教。1993年起先後在英國牛津大學法學院任教和訪學，擔任客座研究員。在30餘年教授國際法的經歷中，他先後兼任多所高校的法學教授，包括康奈爾大學、加州大學洛杉磯分校、巴黎一大和馬賽大學。近年來，他主要講授國際法、歐洲人權法、衝突法，並為就讀LLM學位的國際學生和交換生開設美國法律制度。賈尼斯在國際法學界享有盛名，著述豐碩，包括《國際法》、《國際法概論》、《國際法案例評述》、《歐洲人權法》等多部經典法學著作，發表國際私法、國際公法、國際法史的文章60餘篇，是《荷蘭國際法評論》、《國際共同體法律評論》與《牛津法律與宗教雜誌》的編委會成員。賈尼斯教授在教學、寫作和擔任編輯工作之餘，還是美國律師協會、美國國際法學會、美國法學院協會和國際法協會等組織的委員會委員。自 1990年起擔任美國國務院外交關係委員會委員。
