01
Academic Writing
Writing for academic purposes is very different from writing for pleasure. In addition to the formal tone, it requires planning and organizational skills. In this unit, we are going to study the organization of a paragraph, and how to choose appropriate words.
課時
1.1 Academic Writing
1.2 Word Choice
02
Topic Sentence
The skill of writing topic sentences is of vital importance to a successful paragraph. It usually comes as the first sentence of a paragraph to let readers know what to expect. For beginners, run-on sentences and comma splices are the most common errors, so in this unit, we will also learn to recognize and correct these errors.
課時
2.1 Topic Sentence
2.2 Run-ons & Comma Splices

Supporting Sentences
Supporting sentences, together with a topic sentence make up a paragraph. In this unit, we will discuss how to list the main points in supporting sentences and explain them by giving more details. In addition, the skill of distinguishing between fact and opinion will help us effectively arrange the main points and details.
課時
3.1 Supporting Sentences
3.2 Facts vs. Opinions
04
Concluding Sentence
A concluding sentence signals the end of a paragraph and reminds the readers of the main idea. As the last sentence in the paragraph, it usually restates the topic sentence. In this unit, the technique of paraphrasing will be practiced so as to help us convey the same message in different words and structures.
課時
4.1 Concluding Sentence
4.2 How to Paraphrase
05
Narrative Paragraph
A narrative paragraph is usually developed as storytelling in either the third person or the first person. In the first lesson, we will learn to write a clear and descriptive narrative paragraph by following the time order with details. In the second lesson, the rules of capitalization will be introduced. The rules may sound complex, but most uses of capitals fall under just a few major categories. Once we understand these categories, our writing will be clearer and easier to follow.
課時
5.1 Narrative Paragraph
5.2 Capitalization
06
Descriptive Paragraph
Descriptive writing appeals to the five senses, so it tells how something looks, feels, smells, tastes, and/or sounds. A good description is a word picture; the reader can imagine the object, or person in his or her mind.
課時
6.1 Descriptive Paragraph
6.2 Strategies of Description
07
Process Paragraph
A process paragraph is to explain how to make or do something. It usually begins with a topic sentence that names the topic and tells the reader to look for a process or procedure. Then the proper order of adjectives will be touched upon:they are arranged in the order of determiner, observation, physical description, origin, material and qualifier.
課時
7.1 Process Paragraph
7.2 Royal Order of Adjectives

課時
