Many, if not all, of the subjects introduced into these pages have been dealt with - and dealt with infinitely better, though in other forms - before, hence, any relevant sentiments calculated to further the object in view, that adjusted into their diversified mosaic, have been freely appropriated, and the same is hereby acknowledged. In the chronos there are some in accuracies, the why and wherefore will be self-suggestive to the indulgent reader; but as they do not affect the fact and incident, they are unimportant, and are merely reverted to in the h0pe of deprecating, on this head, at least, that which has daunted'many a braver heart, the licensed critic's ban, and the unlicensed critic's sneer. It may be necessary to state, that it was the desire and. Inter. Tion of the writer to have published early in the summer of 1857 but an adverse insetting current overbore the will, and in re-preparing the volume for the press, some alterations, suited to passing events, might have been beneficially introduced but as any variation in the scaffolding would have left the building unaltered, and as friends to whom the idea was sug gested dissented therefrom, it is before the public with all its imperfections.
