麥卡維提獎由國際偵探小說讀者協會會員提名並投票選出。麥卡維提，出自T.S.艾略特的詩集《老負鼠講講世上的貓》，是一隻帶有神秘色彩的貓。獲獎者會得到一本證書以及一隻被餵飽了的貓。1987年首次頒發。
