《麥克白》講述了蘇格蘭國王鄧肯的表弟麥克白將軍，和班柯為國王征服叛亂後立功歸來，路上遇到三個女巫。女巫對他說了一些預言和隱語，說他將進爵為王，但他並無子嗣能繼承王位，反而是同僚班柯將軍的後代要做國王。女巫預言的蠱惑、自己野心的驅使以及妻子的慫恿，麥克白謀殺了國王鄧肯，自己做了國王。為掩人耳目和防止他人奪位，他又逐步害死了鄧肯的侍衛、班柯、貴族麥克達夫的妻子和孩子。恐懼和猜疑使麥克白心裡越來越有鬼，也越來越冷酷。麥克白夫人精神失常而死，他也無一絲難過。最後，他在鄧肯之子和其請來的英格蘭援軍的圍攻下，落得梟首的下場。
