上世紀80年代的美日合作經典動畫Thundercats 霹靂貓，港譯《虎威戰士》。該動畫講述了長著虎臉人身的Lion-O、Tygra、Panthro、Cheetara逃離了即將滅亡的家園Thundera來到Third Earth，在那裡他們同邪惡的巫師Mumm-Ra戰鬥的故事。在香港播放時同名主題歌《虎威戰士》是由林子祥演唱的。（因為虎是貓科的，所以西方有時管虎叫"大貓"）

1985年首播的全130話TV動畫《霹靂貓》是部美日合作動畫，但當時並沒有在日本播出。參與製作動畫的日本動畫公司Topcraft其實正是吉卜力工作室的前身。也許大家對這家公司沒有印象，但Topcraft和宮崎駿 監督、高畑勛製作人因為成功推出了劇場版《風之谷》奠定影史經典，而讓幕後出資《風之谷》的金主德間書店毅然決定將Topcraft策略性改組為吉卜力工作室，我們才有幸能夠欣賞到接下來的一連串吉卜力動畫。
2007年華納兄弟公司宣布將會把80年代在美國熱播的動畫系列片《霹靂貓》 （Thundercats）拍攝成真人版電影。據悉華納已經買下了新人編劇Paul Sopocy的劇本並交給Spring Creek Productions來製作。據透露，電影的劇情將主要集中在Lion-O如何成為霹靂貓頭領的故事。改編成電影版的《Thundercats 霹靂貓》已經確定由知名電玩美術總監/製作人Jerry O’Flaherty擔任電影版動畫的導演。Jerry O’Flaherty的知名監製電玩包括了《戰爭機器 Gears of War》、《浴血戰場 Unreal Tournament 2004》等遊戲。放映時間在目前雖然未定，但IMDB已經進行更新，預告可望在2010年後看到電影版！
1997年，Cartoon Network 播放了新版的“霹靂貓”卡通片後，重新帶動了“霹靂貓”熱潮。至於“霹靂貓”的漫畫系列，版本也很多。MARVEL系列從1985年出到了1988年；DC的子公司Wildstorm從2003年開始也推出了兩個系列的“霹靂貓”漫畫。
