1982年畢業於中南林學院特用經濟林專業，獲農學學士學位；1985畢業於中南林學院森林保護專業並獲農學碩士學位；1997畢業於芬蘭赫爾辛基大學生態學專業並獲理學博士學位。
曾任《濕地公約》秘書處亞太事務高級顧問（2003-2007），北京大學教授/博導（1997-2003），世界自然基金會中國項目長江項目主任（1999-2001），世界自然基金會中國海洋與濕地項目主任（2001-2002），湖南省林業廳森林資源管理保護局自然保護科副科長、湖南省林業廳森林資源管理保護局高級工程師、總工程師（1988-1997），中南林學院講師、系教學秘書等職（1985-1988）。
