東西方之間的文化藝術從來都是一種雙向選擇、雙向回授的影響關係，既有縱向流傳，更有橫向交流——貿易往來、宗教傳播、民族遷徙、工藝交流，都左右著文化變遷和藝術走向。而現有的美術史研究大多沿襲了傳統的國別史書寫方式，致使地域與文化的美術史中的交融互鑒現象未能彰顯。
本書是世界上第一部署名“跨文化美術史”的專書，匯集了國內外十四位學者的十八項重要研究。這些研究的意義不僅在於提出了觀念上的創新，更在於用充分的案例，具體演示了跨文化美術史研究的展開路徑。它以方法論視野、裝飾與物質文化研究、書評、譯文和訪談等多種形式，探尋東西方之間藝術的文化語境、圖案的生成機制、以及不同文化藝術間的互動影響，嘗試追蹤人類命運共同體的歷史建構過程，並提供講述故事的另類思路。
