1989年獲華中農業大學學士學位，2003年獲中國科學院水生生物研究所博士學位。2003-2004年香港浸會大學生物學作高級訪問學者。承擔和參加了多項科學項目，包括中國國家自然科學基金項目、水專項、973項目、農業部、中科院創新項目等。主要研究興趣是內陸水體無脊椎動物學。近期關注的問題有：無脊椎動物分類與多樣性編目；無脊椎動物的多樣性格局與驅動過程；瀕危無脊椎動物的致危過程與機制；基於無脊椎動物的內陸水體健康狀況評價；河流無脊椎動物多樣性研究。
