不同於以往傳統的西部片只從白人殖民者的視角來刻畫西部的開拓史，從《辛德勒名單》開始一直追求客觀公正再現歷史的斯導在這部《Into the west》中，從白人移民和北美本土印第安人兩個不同家庭的視角來書寫這段宏偉的史詩。兩種截然 不同的文化衝突和交流、融合，移民者建設新家園的艱辛，淘金者的暴富欲望都是此劇要表現的主題。一個是從維吉尼亞州駕著牛車遷徙而來的車匠一家，一個是來自lakota部落的印第安人家庭，他們將一起見證美國西部史上風情詩畫與血雨腥風。當然，愛情、親情、友情絕對是任何佳作中永遠也不會缺少的主題和《兄弟連》一樣，《Into the west》也是一部短劇(Mini Series)，只有6集，共12小時。
