從18世紀開始，西方人就在十分認真地觀察中國。他們畫了大量的圖像、拍攝了大量的照片，並將其帶回了西方，讓西方人看見中國是什麼樣子。戛爾尼使團隨團畫家亞歷山大，在從澳門到北京的往返旅行中，創作了大量反映當時中國風土人情的畫作，隨後在歐洲引起轟動。這是西方畫家第一次如此詳盡地觀察和描繪中國，也是將中國描繪得如此充滿神奇浪漫色彩和異國情調的*後一個時期。書稿收集了亞歷山大僅有兩本著作《中國的服裝》《中國人的服飾和習俗圖鑑》及一些罕見單張版畫。兩本著作合併出版，這在國內外均為首次。
威廉·亞歷山大(1767-1816)，1784年進入英國皇家美術學院繪畫專業學習。1792年作為製圖員，馬戛爾尼使團畫家托馬斯·希基的助手訪問了中國，創作大量的速寫和水彩畫。1794年回到倫敦後，亞歷山大先是過了一段寫生、以畫會友的生活。1802年成為英國畫家軍事學院的教師。1808年任大英博物館古文物部的助理館員，直至去世。著有《中國的服裝》(1805年)《中國人的服飾和習俗圖鑑》(1815年)。
